| Which is the treatment for spent lead-acid batteries? |
When a battery reaches 80% of its nominal capacity, it can be considered
a spent battery and has to be replaced. A spent battery, because of its lead and sulfuric acid content,
is considered hazardous waste and cannot be discarded as any other house garbage, with a municipal
rubbish dump as final destination. On the other side, lead-acid battery components can be totally recycled
|
Battery recycling
Battery recycling consists of the following processes:
a) Acid electrolyte battery content should be dumped (of course, when speaking of vented type batteries). The electrolyte can be neutralized or reused in steel sheet cleaning.
b) Plastic and steel parts should be segregated from lead parts.
As next stage, and depending on the material, we have three different circuits:
1. Steel parts (as motive power batteries trays) are sent to steel scrap recycling processes.
2. Lead parts (as plates, posts, and straps) are melted in appropriate furnaces and converted into lead pigs, to be used as raw material for new plates and soldering bars’ manufacturing.
3. Plastic parts are grinded, washed, dried and bag packed. Plastic pellets can be reused to manufacture different plastic articles, as brickwork pales, flowerpots, automotive or industrial batteries’ internal parts, among other uses.

Enersystem’s battery recycling program
As mentioned above, spent batteries can lead to negative environmental impacts if they are not appropriately handled.
Our complete battery recycling program, makes very easy for customers to help to protect the environment.
Enersystem coordinates spent batteries collection, no matter their sizes, quantity, weigh or brand, and manages
all the processes involving authorized transportation and recycling. This recycling program totally complies
with national and province regulations, and returns a certificate to customer, when required.
